The Journey Begins

We started Not Your Mother’s Networking Group on Facebook in October 2015 as a place for non-traditional business women to network. It was a place for those of us who consider ourselves kind of fringe- queers and artists and non-profiters and basically anyone who didn’t fit into the already existing networking groups in Lansing, Michigan. As the membership grew, it evolved into more of a place for people to get recommendations. More of a women’s coffee klatch than anything else. And that’s fine. But we made a decision as things grew that we were going to keep the main original intent of this group which is for women to support other women. That doesn’t mean we never disagree. It means we do not accuse or shame each other. We don’t call each other names. We don’t use homophobic, sexist, or racist language. Because of the large amount of members, we were getting FLOODED with posts, so we created a few new groups (also on FB): a new group for business-owners-only to get back to the roots of NYMNG; a parenting group so people could talk to other moms about their kids and other issues; and a NYMNG-members only marketplace so the main group wouldn’t be flooded with items for sale.

And now, welcome to the newest branch of the NYMNG tree – a blog that is not necessarily attached to the FB group.  We wanted a place to highlight some of the amazing women in the Lansing area, as well as a place to go to if anything every happens to Facebook.
